Safe.

I will be safe. I will treat my body with the utmost regard. I will use practices which enhance my safety. I will incorporate decisions that will enhance my level of safety throughout the course of my life, each moment of every day.

Kind.

I will be kind. I will seek out those who treat me with kindness. I will treat myself with kindness. I will treat others and myself with kindness. I will be gentle and loving in all ways to others and myself. I know compassion and empathy. I will know kindness of heart while strength of self.

Clean.

I live in health and cleanliness. I know safety and kindness for myself and others by respecting cleanliness. I respect my environment by keeping it orderly. I understand that removing excess simplifies my life and provides me with the ability to move freely in the world. I understand waste and remove waste from my life in appropriate ways.

No More Victims! No More Bullies!

Grow beyond the idea of wanting to restore peace and discipline with children! Expand your skills into something even more tremendous. How about “battling the role of victim”? This starts with YOU!

The SKC philosophy outlines clear and concise methods to use with children that unlock the powers that they reqire so that they STOP trapping themselves in the role of victim. But we must start with ourselves.

Much to my dispair, I see it happen all too often, loving parents and even educated teachers are the ones who make victimization an identity for children. Keep in mind that children do what works. We never really know what their first reason for doing something may be, but we do know that reinforcing that behavior by making it successful may lead to repeated behavior. So what is the answer? Make something else MORE successful.

So….if scooping a child up and coddling them after they have fallen down while blaming another child, perhaps even scolding them as the “bully”…will reinforce both behaviors …and we can see that one is the
poor victim” and another is the “mean old bully” ….eventually both children will wear these as identities. Stop your role in this!

In my book, SAFE, KIND & CLEAN: Behavioral Education, I describe how we adults can stop:

A       Encouraging victimization and bully patterns

A       Begin teaching self reliance through verbal communication

A       Teach children the skills of willingness and compassion to restore and reunify with others

I hope this New Year is filled with the joy and the release of finding a teaching method that restores sanity and kindness in your school, home and heart.

MORE TIPS:

The cold weather and accompanying changes of Winter bring us many ways to weave into our speech and teaching the SKC philosophy:

ÿ               Be clean! Hand washing or the use of hand sanitizer becomes very important as the common cold and other viruses are spread throughout this season.

ÿ               Children (and adults) are healthier if they get some fresh air. It is important to breathe fresh, clean air. The air in homes and schools has been recirculating germs. Put on your coats and take a few moments in the cold or even light rain or snow. This will perk up moods, lighten your hearts and get your blood circulating. Enjoy listening to the different sounds in this magical season with children; the splashing of car tires, the quiet of a snow lined street or the whoosh of the wind.

ÿ               Make the opportunity to clean out what you don’t need and give it to someone who needs it more. After the month of “gimmee-gimmee”, this is a great time to give to the less fortunate and pare down your overfilled closets. If you have already done this, work with your child or class to purchase new socks and deliver them to a homeless shelter. This will instill in children a meaningful simple kindness that will make a real difference. To not only the homeless recipient, but the child who understands the needs of others.

ÿ               While the weather is more extreme, pay close attention to safety precautions. Teach in all you do that may seem obvious: lighting and blowing out candles, buckling seat belts, driving at reduced speeds, clearing the windshield of ice or defrosting windshields before driving. Explain to children how more safety is so important during extreme weather of any type.

"Julie Jenkins Sathe is one of my most significant influences and mentors. I have carried her philosophy of Safe, Kind and Clean with me for over 10 years now. It comes so naturally for both teachers and children because it universally embraces what all early childhood professionals want for children. Its implementation is simple, yet all inclusive, and empowers children with self-awareness, rather than self-judgment. This book is long overdue!"

OTHER BOOKS BY JULIE

“TEENS! CHANGE IS YOUR CHOICE Solutions From Within” is more than a book it is a tool for teens.  This tool is different from any other book on the shelf.  Why? Because it holds no answers.  What it holds is the vehicle through which teens find their own solutions. This tool enables a journey inward that teens are truly seeking in the transitional teen years.
